Brian J McConnell

Founder and Chairman of the Board

Brian J. McConnell, 67, is the Founder, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Executive Officer of MAC Gold Corporation (MAC), a Company that creates and delivers Energy Technologies that are Affordable, Clean, and Reliable.

Previous to founding MAC, McConnell helped Australian companies launch and do business in the Philippines. He was Vice President of the Australian-Philippine Chamber of Commerce. Upon his return to Australia, he assisted in the Product Despatch of one of the country’s largest Cement & Lime producing company which supplied cement and lime to Western Australia’s agriculture, construction and mining industries.

In the late -90s McConnell was tapped to facilitate the establishment of an Asian Internet Search Engine followed by an appointment as CEO for the same Company to restructure and locate new and emerging business opportunities in China.

In the mid-90s, he was recruited as Director of Finance for Aboitiz Group which is recognized as one of the best-managed companies in the Philippines. Aboitiz is a Spanish company established in the Philippines in the 1800s that is heavily invested in power, banking, real estate, food, biofuel, construction and shipping.

During his stint at Aboitiz, McConnell was responsible for refinancing the company’s Super Ferry fleet and assisted in the timely collection of the Transport Company’s Receivables. He was also instrumental in the funding and development of the Super Catamaran fleet that traverse the Southern Islands of the Philippines route.

In the early 90s, McConnell was recruited by the WA Royal Commission to investigate the financial dealings of the government, Laurie Connell’s Rothwells merchant bank, and two of West Australia’s Premiers , in connection with the WA Inc case.

In his early career, McConnell specialized in facilitating the establishment of start-up businesses which included a Financial Services Firm and Mining Company.

As a Council Advisory Member for Gerson Lehrman Group (GLG), a leading New York-based research firm, McConnell served as a Consultant for Business, Banking and Investment Leaders in the USA, Europe and Asia.

McConnell’s background in the field of commercial business and qualifications in Chartered Accounting, plus solid training with WA Chartered Accountants , led to extensive assignments in West Australia and London.

McConnell is a native of Australia’s oldest mining town Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. His father, James McConnell, was also a leading public servant of WA as Chairman of the Fremantle Port Authority.

McConnell is an active member of both Royal Freshwater Bay and Fremantle Sailing Clubs. He is currently focused on MAC Gold, a worldwide renewable energy business.

Nick Burn

Nick Burn

Exploration Geologist

Nick Burn brings over 25 years’ experience in the minerals exploration industry including extensive operational and assessment experience throughout Australia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Nick was previously CEO of ASX-listed uranium explorer Regalpoint Resources Ltd and Exploration Manager for Energy Metals Ltd. He holds degrees in both geology and business administration and is a member of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists.

Significant experience in lithium geology was gained as exploration manager for Haddington Resources, operator of the Bald Hill Tantalum mine near Kalgoorlie and his current consultant role assessing projects (including lithium) for some listed ASX juniors. These roles have involved;

  • exploration for Li-Cs-Ta pegmatites in many of the existing and currently targeted lithium pegmatite fields i.e. Pilbara/Pilgangoora/Moolyella (WA), Greenbushes (WA), Bynoe (NT), Barrow Creek (NT), Mt Edon (WA)
  • brownfields exploration and development at Bald Hill Ta-Li operation
  • JORC qualified in tantalum-lithium mineralization
  • assessment of local and international deposits (Greenbushes, Wodgina, Mozambique, Uganda)
  • understanding of solar brine, lithium borate and lithium clay mineralization styles

Garth Mackie

Corporate Affairs

Garth Mackie is an Australian businessman with extensive local and international experience. He has strong entrepreneurial record in his home State of Western Australia and in the Region, particularly Hong Kong and Shanghai where his strengths in commercial banking, finance, investment broking and business advisory have come into play.


Jason Novobranec

Non-Executive Director | Singapore & Perth

Jason is an experienced executive and non-executive director with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region. He combines strategic leadership with a good, practical understanding of both private and public sectors. He has a strong commercial background in Utilities, Energy, Telecommunications, Finance Transformation and the Information Technology sectors.

Jason works directly with the Chairman of MAC Gold who is based in Perth, Australia, to create the MAC Gold Singapore subsidiary and serve as the ASIAN Director for MAC Gold based out of Singapore. He helps drive joint board and executive strategic planning, focusing on our Mission & Values in collaboration with our team of expert consultants.

Hedley Norrish

Energy and Utilities

Hedley comes to Mac Gold with 22 years experience in the energy and utilities business in Asia Pacific and Australia. Hedley has built, commissioned and operated and maintained CCGT power plants in the UK and Malaysia. In more recent years Hedley has held positions with enterprise software solution companies with roles in both consulting and business development again focussing on energy and utility industry. Hedley has done business in various forms with Western Power, Anaconda Nickel, Origin Energy, Caltex Australia and Hydro Tasmania.


Jonathan Rush

London Representative

Jonathan Rush is a senior PR consultant with more than 25 years’ experience in media, investor and political relations for energy, natural resources, biosciences and financial services organisations. He has also represented several Australian mining companies. Previous positions include communications Director at Energywatch, the UK government’s consumer watchdog; and associate director at Lowe Bell Good Relations. Jonathan was formerly administrator of the UK parliament’s All Party Parliamentary Small Business Group and has managed client relations with the European Commission and European Parliament. He is also an author, a Freeman of the City of London and is active in local government in Buckinghamshire, UK. Jonathan is a graduate engineer and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
